Claudia Chaseling

Installation / Objektkunst, Malerei

* 5.8.1973
Bildung:Masters Visual Arts, UdK Berlin / PhD Visual Arts, Australian National Univ. Canberra
Gruppen: works occasianlly in collaboration with artist Milovan Destil Markovic

Claudia Chaseling’s work comprises wall-size paintings and space filling murals. The artist creates upside down landscapes with reversed and distorted perspectives. The imagery of her Spatial Paintings consists of estranged landscapes, mutated creatures and plants whose deformation is caused by radioactive contamination.

Claudia’s expansive wall/floor paintings interrupt the geometric order and balance of the exhibition space through their profound depth and sway between the two and three-dimensional.
Using a specifically developed technique with dry colour pigments, the artist addresses the antagonistic relationship between structure and chaos, creating new compositions from a state of disorder. The result is an amorphous system of complex fragments reminiscent of light reflections, biomorphic shapes and objects in form of capsule-like creatures. Claudia creates an atmosphere of alienation searching for a new perspective in painting, which captures the multidimensional, unstable realities we exist in today: the mutated perspective.

The diverse body of work, from Spatial Painting to the Graphic Novels, deals with facts and the consequences that in most conflict zones on Earth, weapons are used that contain and distribute long-term radioactivity in form of uranium and plutonium dust.
Graphic Novel “Murphy the mutant” by Claudia Chaseling:

Claudia Chaseling is an international artist, born in Munich, Germany, and living in Berlin. She received a Masters degree in Visual Art, from the University of the Arts in Berlin and a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Visual Art) from the Australian National University in Canberra.

Claudia is known for the practice of Spatial Painting, site-mutative biomorphic abstract murals, which cover walls, floors and ceilings. These works are drafted from one particular viewpoint, to distort and dissolve the familiar geometry of the space, whilst carrying socio-political meaning. In 2013 she published the graphic novel Murphy the mutant that became an anchor for her work to follow.
Claudia has exhibited her work in over eigthy solo and group exhibitions, notably in the United States, Australia and Europe. Among others her work has been featured in the X-Border Biennial, Finland, the Luela Art Biennial, Sweden and the Lorne Biennial, Australia. Solo exhibitions include Museum Nadezda Petrovic, Cacak, Serbia; Wollongong Art Gallery and Yuill Crowely Gallery, Australia; Kunstverein Duisburg and Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany. Notable groups exhibition were Rohkunstbau 26 in Lieberose and “Dissonance. Platform Germany” at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.
In the USA, she has realized major commissions with Art-in-Buildings in New York City and Milwaukee, of which her exhibition “radiationscape” in New York was reviewed in the NY Times. The solo exhibition “silent shadows” in Birmingham, AL, USA in 2023, has received great attention.

Major grants and scholarships received continuously – include those of the German DAAD and Karl Hofer Award; the Australian Samstag Scholarship, IGNITE Career Fund and the Postgraduate Award.
Claudia has taken part in various international visiting artists programs and residencies, among others at Art Omi and the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York, at the Texas A&M University and at the Australian National University.
Her first comprehensive monograph was published by Verlag für zeitgenössische Kunst und Theorie Berlin in 2016. In 2022, the book “Dissonance. Platform Germany” was published by DCV, which presents her work and that of 80 relevant painters of the ‘post-German-Wall generation’ who are active in Germany today.
