Antonia Hirsch

Antonia Hirsch lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Sie wurde in Frankfurt am Main geboren und erhielt ihren BA vom Central Saint Martins College for Art and Design in London, England. Von 1994 bis 2010 lebte und arbeitete sie in Vancouver, Kanada. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien vom Canada Council for the Arts und dem British Columbia Arts Council (Kanada), sowie von der Stadt Vancouver (Kanada) und der Stiftung Kunstfonds (Deutschland). Sie war Artist in Residence bei Institutionen wie dem Banff Centre of the Arts (Kanada), der Cité des Arts in Paris (Frankreich) und CCA Andratx (Spanien).

Antonia Hirschs Arbeiten wurden unter anderem gezeigt in der Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver (Kanada); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge (USA); The Powerplant, Toronto (Kanada); Salzburger Kunstverein (Österreich); Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Taiwan); Tramway, Glasgow (Schottland); Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (Niederlande); und ZKM Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Karlsruhe (Deutschland).

Ihre Arbeiten befinden sich in öffentlichen Sammlungen wie der der Vancouver Art Gallery (Kanada), der National Gallery of Canada und dem Sackner-Archive für Concrete and Visual Poetry in Miami Beach (USA).

Antonia Hirschs künstlerische Praxis basiert darauf, Realität als konsensuelle Fiktion zu begreifen. Ihre Arbeiten reichen von kleinformatigen Objekten bis zu raumgreifenden Installationen, bedienen sich sowohl skulpturaler als auch medialer Formate und werden häufig durch parallele Buchprojekte begleitet.

Für den öffentlichen Raum realisierte Antonia Hirsch die permanente Installation Double Blind (2008), sowie die temporären Projekte Vox Pop (2008), eine Arbeit für ein duales elektronisches Billboard, und Anthropometrics (2006), ein Poster-Projekt, das bisher in Berlin, Ottawa und Vancouver gezeigt wurde.

"Die Hauptmotivation für mein Interesse an Kunst im öffentlichen Raum ist es, das Alltägliche subtil zu verfremden und vor allem einem Nicht-Kunstpublikum einen neuen Blick auf seine Umwelt zu ermöglichen. Wenn ein Projekt in der Lage ist ein fast, aber nicht ganz, plausibles, nützliches oder notwendiges Element des öffentlichen Raums zu sein, kann eine produktive Befragung darüber stattfinden, wer oder was diesen Nutzen oder diese Notwendigkeit bestimmt."
