Science, music and architecture play an important role in my praxis. In regular intervals this leads to collaborations with musicians, dancers or specialists of diverse fields. The context always informs the content, form, material and dimension of my work.
Similar to the architectural approach, exploration through model making is part of the process. These models often precede the larger installations, but sometimes are also created as a follow-up reflection on the subject afterwards. These resulting small sculptural pieces can be specific models or abstractions of the theme at hand and be seen as independent pieces of art.
Throughout the last years I have been working with themes like quantum physics, climate and thermodynamics and combined them with choreography and sound. Projects like ‚Dictum of Nature‘ looks at geometrical formulas developed in theoretical physics. ‚(In)Finite‘ became a performative object in collaboration with the UNESCO. The ‚Well- Tempered Hygrometer‘ is a sculptural installation comprised of wood and horse hair, that reacts to relative humidity and wind. The continuous revolving ‚Magic Lantern‘ is set into motion through heat.
Recently I have extended my research of space to architecture and urbanism and this has not only led to staged installations, but also to performative audio dramas. The result is ‘ME+[city]’ – a special format that I have been developing with Tarik Goetzke (playwright, director). Focus is the diversity of urban fabrics around the world and the research of their cultural identities. Its an artistic interpretation based on the principle of multi-perceptivity of historical events. So far ME+ROME (2017) and ME+BEIJING (2018) have been developed and further cites are in negotiations for the upcoming years.
The observer is always of importance within the context of the projects, as he can act as initiator and instigator for movement and therefore takes immediate relation to the environment and its transformation.
Above mentioned projects create basis and foundation, on which I am building on, in order to evolve further techniques of collaboration and interdisciplinarity and to understand the potential of science (like history, maths or physics) in relation to movement and sound to create new relationships between the individual, the collective, space and time.
Next to her own practice as an artist, Anna Kubelík, collaborates with a wide variety of people from diverse fields and disciplines within the Arts and Sciences, such as dancers, composers, theatre directors as well as scientists and most recently with people from educational, scientific and cultural organisations. Hence it is inherent to her work to range in scale, material and context, however there is always a performative element to be found throughout all her projects.
Studying at Chelsea College of Art & Design Anna Kubelík carried on to finish her Diploma at the Architectural Association, School of Architecture in London/UK. After working as an architect in London and Berlin, she started her own practice.
Based in Berlin, Anna Kubelík works internationally on projects. She has received numerous awards and scholarships, such as the first prize Blooomaward at the Cologne Art Fair, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Council Fond Berlin for the Arts and Culture and has enjoyed residencies in Europe, Asia and the United States.
In the last years she has been guest critic and lecturer amongst others at Chelsea College of Art & Design (London/UK), at the IED European Design Institut, at the Accademie di Belle Arti di Roma and the Cornell University in Rome.
Most recently she was a fellow at the ‘Akademie Schloss Solitude’, resident at the ‚Goehte-Institut‘ in Beijing as well as the holder of the ‘Rome Prize’ at the Villa Massimo.
