Cécile Pitois was born in 1968 and lives and works in Tours, France. She investigates the relationship between beings and the spaces that surround them. This approach is materialized through various work processes and media--painting, photography, performances and projects done in collaboration with choreographers. She turns to sculpture for its ability to crystallize a moment. Amongst these formal visual directions, Cécile Pitois has been developing for the past ten years the series Sculptures à Souhaits (Wishing Sculptures), works that are often installed in a public space. They are based on locations where the artist intervenes, inciting passersby to suspend the flux of life in order to question their own selves, their relationship to the city and to those who experience it. On the border between physical and mental reality, these sculptures function as a support for a story that reveals reality’s superimposed layers, creating a type of ritual that opens onto the imaginary. A mon seul désir (To my sole desire) and La Fontaine des amoureux (The Lovers´ Fountain), pieces that were created in 2005 and 2006 in Touraine, the projects Over Walls (2007), made for Red Hook in Brooklyn, New York and Der esel der zuhört à Halle (2010), in the land of Saxe-Anhalt, Germany, are to be considered in the context of this relentless approach that is marked with generosity.
