At FIXTURES #6 - Jour Fixe of the Media Workshop we are very glad to welcome: Adnan Softić and Nina Softić. The artist-duo will present their project KLIMATON.

KLIMATON explores how artistic approaches can engage with scientific data archives—especially when dealing with complex and abstract issues such as global warming. At its center is the Klimaton Arctic sound instrument: a resonating body of the Arctic that translates scientific measurements into sound. As a hybrid of sonification device and musical instrument, it offers a playful and sensorial way of accessing scientific content.

In collaboration with scientists from the MOSAiC expedition (Alfred Wegener Institute), the artist duo developed the generative sound object Klimaton ARCTIC – a large-scale sonified portrait of a disappearing landscape, based on scientific data from the largest Arctic research expedition ever undertaken.

However, their goal was never just to create a sound object, but to initiate open and inclusive research processes. Depending on the perspective, the object can be understood as a musical instrument, sound archive, an extensive portrait of a melting landscape, a
sound sculpture, a protagonist/subject from a distance or a toy.

The duo aims to organise a multilayered perception that sets itself the task of practising listening as a means of overcoming existing systemic paradigms - listening as unlearning They understand this approach as a practice of remote senses – a search for new forms of perception that can lead to the development of new artistic methods and foster a more holistic approach to engaging with the Earth.

The project is situated at the interface of art, science, social design and eco-politics and manifests through both performative and installative artistic formats.
