Survey about the Space Needs of Berlin’s Independent Arts Community

Dear colleagues,

While the development of working spaces for artistic spaces in Berlin has been brought forward over the course of the last years, we still face the same problem: the need for affordable working spaces and rehearsal rooms in Berlin is extremely high and is even more at risk in 2025 due to the budget cuts being conducted by Berlin’s Senate.

This year’s survey is intended to provide information regarding the basic topics of space needs in the fields of the performing arts, dance, music, literature and project spaces. With the information that is collected here, it will be possible clearly explain the space needs of the independent arts community and derive the measures that are necessary on a sound, well-founded basis. The results of the survey will be published in the fall of 2025 and will be made publicly available.

The survey conducted in 2022, realized jointly for the first time by Raumbüro Freie Szene and Kultur Raum Berlin gGmbH, indicated that approximately 50 percent of the artists who completed the survey were searching for a working space or a rehearsal space. In this year’s survey, we are interested in the space needs of artists in light of the current situation – funding that fails to materialize, spaces that are at risk of being lost, personal effects.

All professional artists working within Berlin’s independent arts community are warmly invited to take part in the current survey regarding artistic working spaces and rehearsal spaces in Berlin.
