From November 15, 2024, the Decolonial Monument will be open to the public!
From November 15, the decolonial memorial Earth Nest by The Lockward Collective (Jeannette Ehlers, Rolando Vázquez and Patricia Kaersenhout) will be accessible in front of the Berlin Global Village.
A historic moment, because Berlin will have its first memorial to decolonization! And a historic day, because on November 15, 1884, the “Congo Conference” took place in Berlin, at which the colonial powers divided up the African continent among themselves.
The “Eath Nest” is an open, bronze nest that invites visitors to engage with decolonial resistance. It honors the peoples and territories that were or still are affected by the violence of colonialism and speaks out for healing the wounds that have resulted from our colonial past. The decolonial memorial Earth Nest is intended to be a place of remembrance and encounter.
As part of the design of the memorial, The Lockward Collective has invited communities from former colonies to share their stories and experiences. Visitors can listen to these stories in an audio series. Access is via QR codes and an online platform.
The memorial was selected by an international jury in a worldwide, open and anonymous art competition and will be officially opened in front of the Berlin Global Village on November 14, 2024. The competition and the creation of the artwork will be accompanied by an extensive supporting and educational programme as well as innovative public relations work on the topic of decolonization.
