Network meeting Culture needs spaces 2025

Network meeting of Berlin's actors on the topic of work, rehearsal, performance and production spaces for art and culture.

Berlin's special feature is its culture. Its capital. Every cultural practice needs space. Yet non-profit space has become such a valuable resource in Berlin that it threatens to become unaffordable. In terms of cultural and urban development policy, Berlin currently seems toothless and risks losing art and culture.

Workspaces, practice spaces, performance spaces, presentation spaces, spaces for discourse and experimentation - open spaces for everyone, closed spaces for individuals, for professional cultural businesses and for amateurs - we are all looking for spaces, see the state of Berlin and the districts as responsible for state-owned real estate and would like to see clever models of cooperation with private owners who also have a vision of a city worth living in.

Initiated by the Atelierbüro im kulturwerk des bbk berlin in cooperation with the AG Räume of the Berliner Kulturkonferenz, the aim is to join forces in solidarity and thus strengthen our forces.

We know that we are not alone: We are seeing encouraging activities at different ends, which we now want to start bundling together.

On 20 June, we are activating networks, calling people together, approaching politicians and inviting them to tackle this urgent issue together from now on, in order to work on the topic of space and culture in a wide variety of functions and organizations. Also with the perspective that this could result in a round table on spaces for culture. At this meeting, we want to discuss how we can consolidate the exchange and address our common needs even more strongly.

The Berlin Cultural Conference is currently an association of 23 major Berlin cultural associations with the aim of jointly representing the political concerns of cultural professionals. Under this umbrella, the AG Räume is committed to the infrastructure in terms of rehearsal rooms, workspaces, studios and performance opportunities for musicians, performing artists, visual artists, writers and in cultural education.

The studio office in the kulturwerk of the bbk berlin has a tradition of over 30 years in securing and developing workspaces for Berlin's visual artists. Since 2024 we have been part of the AG Räume of the Berlin Cultural Conference. Together we want to bundle the conversation of committed people on the topic of space in this city.
